High Capacity Telehandler- Pre-Operation Check and Inspection

Undoubtedly, a high capacity telehandler is one of the most efficient machines that can be seen on construction sites. In large sites, more than one telehandler is used to complete the work on time. They are said to be multi-tasking equipment as they have attachments that make the machine more versatile to use. However, another factor to ponder in terms of telehandler is its maintenance cost. Since it is a huge machine with several parts, nuts, bolts, and attachments; it needs a deep inspection every time the operator has to operate it.

Every machine on a construction site is busy for 24 hours as workers work on a shift basis. Therefore, it is mandatory to inspect the machine every time the next worker in the respective shift has to operate a high capacity telehandler. Here are some of the components listed below that every operator should check before starting the telehandler on the site.

1. Cleanliness - Check all surfaces for leakage (oil, fuel, or battery fluid) or foreign objects. Report any leakage to the proper maintenance personnel.

2. Structure - Inspect the machine structure for dents, damage, weld or parent metal cracks or other discrepancies.

3. Safety Decals - Ensure all safety decals are legible and in place. It should be clean or replaced as required.

4. Operation and Safety Manuals – The operator has to go through the Operation & Safety Manual provided by the high capacity telehandler provider. One cannot operate the telehandler without knowing the safety instructions.

5. Fluid Levels - Check fluids, including fuel, hydraulic oil, engine oil, and coolant. Before removing filler, caps, or fill plugs, wipe all dirt and grease away from the ports. If dirt enters these ports, it can severely reduce component life.

6. Attachments/Accessories - Ensure correct capacity charts are installed on the telehandler. If provided, reference the Operation & Safety Manual of each attachment or accessory installed for specific inspection, operation, and maintenance instructions.

7. Operational Check - Once the walk-around inspection is complete, perform a warm-up and operational check of all systems in an area free of overhead and ground-level obstructions.
